RYA Day Skipper Course

The Club is planning to run the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Course during 11/12th, 18/19th and 25th February 2012.  Suitable for all new skippers, first mates and crew who want to get a solid introduction to navigation needed to safely skipper a boat in known coastal waters. Age from 16 years old, so ideal for training up the family crew members to be more useful on your boat this summer!

Course topics include:

  • Essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chart work, position fixing and plotting a course to steer (paper and electronic)
  • Weather forecasting and meteorology
  • Collision regulations and SOLAS
  • Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts

The cost is £160 for Club members and £200 for non-members and includes: 40 hours instruction, training material and charts, CD ROM software for the RYA chart plotter ‘simulator’ and exam papers.  The bar & restaurant will be open for lunch but you may bring your own if preferred.  Tea & coffee will be provided on arrival. Students need to provide own Portland course plotter and dividers kit (from RYA website £20.49), HB pencils and eraser and if required, a copy of the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Notes from RYA website £10.99.
