Winter Lecture – Saturday 17 March

Peter Moir is co-author of the books Clyde Shipwrecks and Argyll Shipwrecks and has been an active sport diver for nearly 40 years.  Along with his friend Ian Crawford, they have spent many years researching, locating and diving on shipwrecks along Scotland’s western seaboard.  Their books are popular with divers, sea anglers, local historians and anyone interested in the Clyde and West Coast.  The result is a unique catalogue of west coast shipping history and its tragic but intriguing legacy of shipwrecks.

Peter will present some of the thousands of photographs Ian and he have collected over the last 30 years while researching shipwrecks around Scotland. The talk is titled ‘Clyde Shipwrecks…..in Camera’ and will focus on some of the more notable vessels wrecked along the Clyde coast over the last 150 years.  Vessels from the earliest paddle steamers to the familiar ‘Sugar Boat’ off Helensburgh will be included and, where possible, underwater photographs will be used to illustrate their condition today.  There are also many vessels lost between Rosneath and Greenock and some of these will also feature, such as the paddlesteamer Iona I, lost en route to the American Civil War in 1862.

The lecture commences at 7:00 pm.

Bar suppers will be available for all members and, if you are attending the lecture, supper will be available before the lecture from 6:00 pm or after until 9:00 pm.

There is no charge for the lecture but it would appreciated if you could book bar suppers through the office.
