Winter Lecture – Saturday 3 March
G.L. Watson
The Art & Science of Yacht Design
by Hal Sisk, Yachting Historian
The inevitable question arises: who is the greatest yacht designer of all time?
“Why, Watson, of course.”
- Olin J. Stephens II
Yachting historian Hal Sisk presents the case for Scotland’s George Lennox Watson, arguably the most successful and versatile independent yacht designer of the Golden Age, 1880 to 1905.
For the first time, author Martin Black’s newly published biography “G.L. Watson, The Art & Science of Yacht Design” affirms Watson’s reputation and places it firmly among his longer lived and currently better known contemporaries: Fife and Herreshoff.
Martin Black’s original research for the biography spans 25 years and Hal will illustrate his presentation with many images never before seen in print, including photographs from private collections, fresh first hand accounts of America’s Cup races, and lines plans reconstructed from original builders’ half models.
Hal Sisk has lectured extensively on yachting history in five continents. His most visual presentations have been deemed sufficiently entertaining to be keynote after dinner talks at classic yachting events and symposia.
The lecture is priced at £5.00 per person payable in advance.
In addition, a hot buffet supper will be available, priced at £12 per person payable on the night, from 6.30 pm onwards.
Please book for the lecture and/or the buffet through the office.
